Memo: Second Appeal Letter on behalf of Archbishop Jovan

15 August 2012

Prime Minister Nikola Grueksi
Bul Illinen bb
1000 Skopje
Republic of Macedonia FYROM

Mr. Prime Minister:

Humbly I greet you with the peace and love of our Lord God I pray all is well with you!

Let us dispense with yet another polite and diplomatic appeal to your person and office on behalf of Archbishop Jovan of Ohrid, Metropolitan of Skopje.

No more will we list the specific crimes committed against the body and apostolic office of this gentle soul by the hopelessly corrupt MOC (Macedonian Orthodox Church) that continues to collaborate with sycophantic elements within your judicial system to repeatedly arrest, imprison and mistreat Archbishop Jovan over the past several years. The Macedonian (FYROM) judiciary is regarded as a Stalinist relic throughout democratic Europe and as an embarrassing caricature of the vital and independent judicial system that every modern state sees as its pride and joy in 2012.

It is now virtually certain Archbishop Jovan - now seriously ill and his health rapidly declining – will die in your prison system SOON unless you, Mr. Prime Minister, immediately dismiss the spurious charges and fabricated evidence against him and set free the only recognized and legitimate Orthodox Prelate that Macedonia knows. Do you want his death and disgusting mistreatment to be a part of the personal legacy that you bequeath to the scrutiny and judgement of not only the community of nations in Europe but also to the scrutiny and judgement of future generations within your own country?

You and your office have the power and authority to brush aside and censure the venomous cretins that control the MOC and their toadies within your distressing judiciary and set Archbishop Jovan free to seek proper medical attention which would then allow him to resume his duties and obligations to the Holy Orthodox faithful in Macedonia and address their need for spiritual nourishment and the alleviation of the extraordinary material privations they have been enduring for many years at the hands of the MOC and your judiciary.

All of Europe will applaud you! World Orthodoxy will sing your praises! Hopefully, such dynamic leadership on your part will enable you and your allies to make the future changes necessary to allow Macedonia to finally move away from the savage and anti-democratic legacies of its medieval Stalinist past.

Or… have I sadly misjudged you and your office? Do you, sir, preside over a modern 21st century nation with its eyes and energies firmly set on a bright and prosperous future as a strong member of a democratic Europe … as a leader of a Macedonian government that first and foremost serves the needs of its diverse, talented and energetic citizenry?

Or, in fact, do you and your high office stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the MOC and your judiciary as they continue to find their frame of reference in the 1940s and 1950s when a totalitarian communist dictatorship savagely ruled every aspect of social, political and cultural life in Yugoslavia and Macedonia? The brutal mistreatment of Archbishop Jovan these days would have been a common occurrence during those dark times. The shameful and deadly treatment of this saintly man, if continued, would position Macedonia alongside some of the primitive, totalitarian states we see today in Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia, in particular the former southern republics of the USSR.

The MOC was founded many years ago by the communist government in Skopje as a de facto
government church loyal only to the ideology and practices of the ruling elites that exercised complete control over the communist party and the Macedonian population. The MOC has long feared the emergence of a strong and vital new leader of the historical but much diminished Orthodox Church that had been viciously repressed by the MOC and the communist authorities for decades. That dynamic new leader is Archbishop Jovan. His loving and energetic manner has engaged all of Macedonia and led to a rebirth of legitimate Holy Orthodoxy inside Macedonia. Long suppressed and repressed, their church enjoys the recognition and support of the Patriarchates in Serbia, Constantinople, Greece, Russia, Bulgaria and Romania, and including Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of North & Central America, among others. That is why Archbishop Jovan has been persecuted and that is why he is near death in prison and that is why his monks, nuns and parishioners endure ferocious assault throughout your nation. The MOC is not recognized by world orthodoxy and yet it continues to behave exactly as it did when your country was ruled by the communist party which needed a lapdog church to help it control the population.

Don’t you think, Mr. Prime Minister, that is time for you and your friends to stand up and position yourselves behind the notion of a modern democratic Macedonia and a bright future in 21st century Europe? Don’t you think, sir, it is high time that your judicial system incorporate the rule of law, the quaint notions of civil and human rights and freedom of religion into its culture and proceedings?
Finally, don’t you feel it is time that the MOC and other Stalinist artefacts that survive and(apparently) thrive in your beautiful land these days be swept away and relegated to the dust bin of history like other moldering relics of the Cold War?

We are waiting, sir, for a moral and ethical response to these challenging questions that have been directed to you and your office for several years from all over the world? Which path will you and your office choose: a promising future in the European family of nations? Or will Macedonia and its brilliant peoples continue to be entangled and dragged down by the dark ages contained in its communist past? It is more than 20 years since the Wall came down!

Enough! Release Archbishop Jovan immediately!

May God bless you and guide you!
