ANNOUNCEMENT From the Orthodox Ohrid Archbishopric (www.poa-info.org)

In great pain, we feel forced to declare that the barbarism of the government of the Republic of Macedonia, in collaboration with the schismatic MOC, conducted over the members of the Orthodox Ohrid Archbishopric reached unforeseen dimensions. The prison management of the central prison Idrizovo, where His Beatitude, the Archbishop of Ohrid and Metropolitan of Skopje kyr kyr Jovan serves a sentence, did not allow him a 24-hour leave from the prison for the celebration of the Birth of Christ – Christmas.

But the thing that is at the basest level atheism and that cannot be justified is that after the direct instructions of the highest state authorities, whose consultant regarding the issues concerning the Orthodox Ohrid Archbishopric is openly recognized, Archbishop Jovan was denied a visit by some of the Bishops or priests of the Orthodox Ohrid Archbishopric in order to be given Communion. Even the most basic right, which has not been denied to anyone in prison, the right to a religious confession, was fully denied to Archbishop Jovan. Merely to mention that not only now – at Christmas, but also during the summer, for the feast of Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, the Archbishop was denied Communion.

We call upon all persons and institutions in the world, the fighters for freedom of religious confession and other human rights and freedoms, to stand up for putting an end to these latest methods of torture over Archbishop Jovan through which they exert violence over his conscience.

If this is how we hope the Republic of Macedonia to be accepted as a member of the European Union, without even a minimum respect for the human rights, then we deeply deceive ourselves, but we also deceive the people.

Christmas 2005
